Phixr can now destroy your photos

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Hi folks, been a while… nevertheless, we have some new stuff for you. Phixr can now not only make photos look prettier, but it can also destroy them. Make your photos look rotten and dirty! Phixr’s new textures (in the Decorate-tool) are ways easier to handle than putting a negative under your car’s wheels and going over it a couple of times… Samples follow:

Apart from that, we have also some new textures to add color to your life. These are especially useful for fashion photos:

New effects

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Here we go again. Some of the new stuff online as of now:

  • Selective b/w: Found in Color effects, this tool is for turning a photo into a b/w photo, except for certain parts. You can select a color that is to remain unchanged, or vice versa. For example:

  • New Warholize effect (in Color effects): We had an effect of this name for a while, but we were never satisfied with the results. Therefore, we decided to re-do this one (the old one is still available):

  • New Lego effect: Found in Blur/soften/distort effects. The block size is variable.

Color balance tool redone

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

After a lot of enhancements on the fun front, we thought it was about time to do some work on the more serious tools Phixr offers. As a result, the Color Balance / Levels tools got some overhaul:

  • Color balance is now done more properly, with real separation between shadows, mid-tones and highlights. In essence, this tool now works exactly like Photoshop’s color balance. As with the latter, the color balance can be adjusted for shadows, mid-tones and highlights separately.
  • The Levels tool can now adjust not only the black point/white point, but the levels for each of the red, green and blue channels as well… separately, and at the same time.
  • Say hello to a new family member: The Channel tool can adjust hue, saturation and lightness separately for up to six color channels (red, yellow, green, cyan, blue, magenta).

Tilt-shift, etc.

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Today’s update include the following new features:

  • Upon public demand we included a “tilt-shift” effect, now found in Camera & Lens tools. Tilt-shift in our context means simulating an extremely shallow depth of field. More information can be found in Phixr’s help, long story short, here are a few examples (google can give you more, just search for “tilt shift”):

  • Rotate: We added a new way of determining the angle. You can now “mark” the horizon, which will be exactly horizontal after rotating the image. Sounds complicated, but is really easy. Just draw a line into the left thumbnail in the rotation tool window.

  • You can now create images from scratch, for instance, for creating backgrounds (using eg. the gradient tool).

More 2 come, stay tuned. Happy phixing in the meantime.

New gradient tool, enhanced Collage tool, and more

Friday, February 4th, 2011

We have been working on a real bunch of new features in the last weeks, a part of which we have now released to the public. The news are:

  • A new tool to create color gradients. It is found in the “Geometric shapes” tool, which now has a “gradients” tab. You can choose from a zillions of options, like colors, shape, position, length and more. The angle and the length are specified by clicking into the middle thumbnail, clicking and thereby drawing a yellow line (as depicted in the image below). The angle of the line will be the angle of the gradient, its length will be the length of the gradient. This tool is mainly for creating backgrounds for other photos (which can later be put into the background with the “Collage” tool), but gradients can also be a nice decoration inside photos:

  • The “Collage” tool, which is for mixing photos into one another, has been enhanced. In the past, it could make a selectable color transparent. However, the results were kind of “harsh”, because the tool didn’t soften the edges. Now, the tool can anti-alias (soften) the edges, and more: The option of also making similar colors to the selected one transparent is more flexible. You can set a criterion for what is considered “similar” based on hue, lightness, color components, etc. In the example below, we mixed one of Phixr’s sample images into another, making some green color tone transparent, and thereby essentially eliminating the background of the flower.

  • Speaking of color: The color picker has a new feature, too. You can now not only select a color from the color spectrum, but also one from the photo. The little “injection needle” to the right switches between the spectrum and a thumbnail of the photo.

That’s all for now, more coming up. Stay tuned… and happy phixing!

Footnote: Two more tools…

… now support the selection: Brightness/Contrast/etc and Color balance/Levels. This allows neat effects like changing the face color of a person while leaving all else untouched.

Text tool, reloaded

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

The text tool has always been Phixr’s most popular tool. When we added the shadow feature a while back, we got much positive feedback. Reason enough to think further.

The result are the following new features:

  • Shadows, which previously looked kind of “harsh”, can now be blurred to look smoother.
  • The text tool can now draw inner and outer bevels in order to give text as neat 3D look.
  • In reaction to public demand, you can now select a background color. This is especially useful for text in front of very colorful backgrounds, where it was difficult to read.
  • Better preview: The preview now works like in other tools, the selection can be changed inside the tool window. (We introduced this feature in fact a few weeks back already, but it was never mentioned in the blog.)

Happy phixing!

PS: Phixr now works with IE9 (platform preview). However, IE9 is still beta and buggy, so there might be one or the other problem.

Selection, reloaded, pt.2

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

In addition to “smooth” selections (using the “feather”, see our our previous blog post), we can now also make elliptical selections: The selection, shown as the dashed rectangle, is treated as if it was elliptical by the tools already supporting the feather feature (Color tools, Sharpen, Blur/Soften, Fun effects). Here are the usual examples:

Sepia in elliptical selection. Feather 0.

In other news, we saved some screen estate by moving the “Upload more photos”-button into the area below, now in shape of small photo with a green “plus”-sign. Clicking on this icon makes the upload-form visible. We hope you don’t get confused by this basically trivial change.

Happy phixing!

Introducing “feather”

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Hello again. Today we have a new option for the selection. Remember the “selection”? This is when you select a part of your photo by clicking into the photo and dragging the mouse elsewhere. The area covered by your dragging movement is highlighted and hereinafter called “the selection”.

Until now, applying special effects to parts of the photo gave not-so-nice results like this:

Charcoal effect with inverted selection

Charcoal effect with inverted selection

This is where our new feature comes in. It is called “feather” and it is for softening the edges of the selection. The same effect applied with a feather of “100″ looks like this:

Charcoal with feather 100

Charcoal with feather 100

I think the result speaks for itself. Here is another example, first without feather, secondly with feather:

Santaclausify without feather

The feather is available for sharpen, blur/soften tools, special effects and color effects, and is found in the bottom area of the tool windows:
