Phixr agora fala português.

Friday, March 15th, 2013

Phixr is now available in seven languages! This week we added Portuguese. The portuguese version is available at pt.phixr.com. Except for some help text, the site is completely translated. If you find translation errors, drop us a note – we’d be happy to know.

In other news:

  • Sliders: Double-clicking on the slider handles now resets the slider to its default value.
  • Tool windows: A small lock icon in the title bars now allows locking and unlocking the selection’s aspect ratio. Previously, this was only possible using the respective button in the main window.
  • On touch devices, double-tapping the selection resets it.

Footnote: Two more tools…

… now support the selection: Brightness/Contrast/etc and Color balance/Levels. This allows neat effects like changing the face color of a person while leaving all else untouched.

Selection, reloaded, pt.2

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

In addition to “smooth” selections (using the “feather”, see our our previous blog post), we can now also make elliptical selections: The selection, shown as the dashed rectangle, is treated as if it was elliptical by the tools already supporting the feather feature (Color tools, Sharpen, Blur/Soften, Fun effects). Here are the usual examples:

Sepia in elliptical selection. Feather 0.

"Pop art" fun effect with elliptical selection, feather 100.

In other news, we saved some screen estate by moving the “Upload more photos”-button into the area below, now in shape of small photo with a green “plus”-sign. Clicking on this icon makes the upload-form visible. We hope you don’t get confused by this basically trivial change.

Introducing “feather”

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Hello again. Today we have a new option for the selection. Remember the “selection”? This is when you select a part of your photo by clicking into the photo and dragging the mouse elsewhere. The area covered by your dragging movement is highlighted and hereinafter called “the selection”.

Until now, applying special effects to parts of the photo gave not-so-nice results like this:

Charcoal effect with inverted selection

This is where our new feature comes in. It is called “feather” and it is for softening the edges of the selection. The same effect applied with a feather of “100” looks like this:

Charcoal with feather 100

I think the result speaks for itself. Here is another example, first without feather, secondly with feather:

The feather is available for sharpen, blur/soften tools, special effects and color effects, and is found in the bottom area of the tool windows:

November news

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Previously on Phixr:

  • Adding decorations is now much easier: You can resize and relocate your decoration not only through the selection in the main window, but also from within the preview window. This also works for the Color tools, the “Geometric shapes“- and “Speechbubble“-tools as well as for  the “Collage / Mix (combine) photos” tool. Also, the selection can now be moved beyond the photo’s edges. This means that e.g. decorations can be placed partly outside of the photo.

  • Christmas and New Year’s Eve decorations and borders are now publicly available; however, we were kind of late when we started designing them, so some of them are still in the queue and will come within the next few days.
  • Phixr is again faster due to some internal changes.

As always, happy phixing!

Crop, Facebook, selection and friends

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Relevant or not? Decide for yourself:

  • The Crop tool is now enhanced. It has a couple of presets which allow you to crop parts of a certain aspect ratio. Also, Phixr can resize (scale) the photo immediately after cropping, without using the Resize tool. This way you can create avatars or icons in a single step.
  • The aspect ratio of the selection can be locked. This is especially useful in connection with the enhanced Crop tool. You can move and resize the selection without losing its current aspect ratio.
  • Phixr can now resize photos on-the-fly when e-mailing them. Do not be afraid: The original remains untouched. Only the photo actually sent is resized.
  • Phixr can now upload photos to Snapfish, Tumblr, Cosco (welcome back), PictureTrail and a few more. Buzznet removed their upload facility, so we ditched them. Fotolog changed their way to upload photos, and we adapted to this now.
  • Uploading to Facebook and flickr is now up to 30% faster. SmugMug access is now up to 50% faster.
  • Phixr is now all UTF-8. All file names, album names etc. work correctly if they contain UTF-8 characters. Also, Phixr handles file names correctly when uploading (some of the third party services do not like non-ASCII characters in their album or file names).

The power of selection

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Good day, fellow phixrs. We just uploaded a new version with the following visual improvements:

  • The Color effects, Blur/Soften/Distort tools and sharpen tools now support the selection. Remember this one? “Selecting” means marking a part of the image by clicking left, moving the mouse and releasing the button. The area covered will highlight, and this is called a “selection”. The news is that you can now sepia-tone only a part of the image, and this goes for all the tools mentioned in the beginning.
  • Phixr now stores three steps of your work to which you can return using the undo tool. “Revert” can also be undone.
  • The zoom blur tool has two new features: First, you can select a center. Second, you can select the size of this center (in form of a circle’s radius) which remains unblurred. The radial blur tool also allows selecting a center now.
  • New glass tile effect in Blur/Soften/Distort tools
  • The border tool offers a wooden picture frame.

We kept them flowing

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Hallo again. The last post is already over a week old, shame on us. It’s not that we aren’t writing, thing is that we’re writing program code these days… and lots of it. Here is today’s list of news:

  • The old “despeckle” tool grew into a “noise tools” tool, and we added a film grain feature. (Well, not a big deal: You can add some noise to your photo. Looks good sometimes.)
  • The “blur tools”  now also have motion blur, zoom blur and a new, much faster radial blur. Furthermore, you can now pixelize your photo, like it was part of a computer game in the 1980s.
  • The “sharpen” tool got a new “unsharp mask” feature. You can create high-contrast photos using this (however, this is neiher HDR, nor “HDR-ish”).
  • The “color tools” got some additional friends: “Make love, not war” make your photo like it’s been taken in the early 1970s (or 60, if you like). “Sobel” shows the photo’s edges, looks good if blended into the original photo. The “poster” and “two-color” tools aren’t new, but found a more suitable home here. Also, they allow more adjustments now.
  • In the “special effects” section, we have a new “magic halo” tool. Have a look yourself, it’s hard to describe.
  • Wherever you could mix the original photo into the processed one, you can now not only mix (“normal”), but apply various operators known from the “decorate” and “mix photos” tools.
  • We again updated our contrast and brightness feature. The contrast now works adaptive to the very photo’s histogram.
  • We again updated the preview feature in the blur, noise, sharpen, special fx tools.
  • JPG and PDF can now be downloaded/saved in various quality levels, and you get a preview of the compresseion quality result. PNG8 is now supported.

We hope that we can catch up on the blog front soon. Until then, as usual, we leave you with a few random samples for the new features:

Some enhancements

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

The marked area (sometimes called “selection” in other applications) is now more flexible than before, and it is persistent as long as the image isn’t resized. Also, if you change the marked area after opening a tool that refers to it, you can now update the coordinates. If you press shift during marking, the marked area will be a square. If you press ctrl, the marking will not “snap” to the image edges.

The text annotation tool is now more powerful… the rest is up to you to discover!

Merry christmas!
